Viking StoolThis stool was inspired by both rustic viking furniture and contemporary angles. Oak was used so the edge could be blackened, and it's intended to give it a slightly burnt look while still having a modern contrast. The angles were more for fun - I had the idea, tried it and liked it, so used it on the final design. The upholstered top was chosen because the warm red paired well with the oak, and the black and white binding goes with the timber and ebonised contrast.
The runes are taken from the Younger Futhark, and in this case spell out "This is not a stool". I decided not use the meanings of the runes, and instead if the letter versions, simply so people would be able to read it.
Depot ProjectIn the Depot project, the Level 3 Extended class were given the brief to make items for the local youth cafe, Depot.
The items had to be useful or artistic (or both!).
I first had the idea to make a blob tree, a tool used in counselling, with coat hooks by each blob figure so people could put their coat on whichever one they related to. With the time constraints, however, I cut down the idea.
Instead, I decided to make a blob branch. A single branch with five coat hooks and five figures. The figures represent a simplified range of emotion, from feeling bad to feeling good.
It's made from plywood, so it's strong and more modern looking. The people are lasercut from bamboo, simply for the grain and texture, and the hooks are made from beech dowel. On the back are two keyhole hooks so it can be hung on the wall. Some comments on what people think the characters represent, from left to right:
1st: "Hanging from a thread", "Desperate", "Pressure", "On the brink".
2nd: "Scared", "Anxious", "Insecure."
3rd: "Sad", "Defeated", "Upset".
4th: "Complicit", "Content", "Neutral".
5th: "Happy", "Energetic", "Calm".
Story TilesPartially influenced by story cards and partly by dominoes, Story Tiles are a nonverbal writing aid designed to help writers and roleplayers build up a story. I designed them to be lined up with the ground line following through, connecting the tiles. However they can be used in whatever ways the owner wishes.
They've been through a few changes. Firstly they were going to be laser engraved onto wood, before the laser cutter broke. I then decided to pyrograph them onto wood instead, as well as make boxes to go along with them. Once the laser cutter was fixed I made some laser cut ply tiles in ply boxes to sell, as a cheaper version of the "luxury" pyrographed tiles.
Although not intended as a game, they could still be used as one. I wrote instructions which included a few starting points or "rules", which are burned into a piece of wood or laser engraved onto the lid.As I said, these were influenced by story cards and dominoes, but the inspiration came from the fact I've always loved nonverbal storytelling, as I for a long time found it difficult to use spoken word, and still do. I've always found images easier to work with, so decided to make something that involved a story through art rather than words.I do intend to sell these at the exhibition and markets, and possibly be able to sell them online as well. I think I will go with the pyrographed version over the laser cut, as I prefer to make art instead of a product.
Christmas FairThe brief was simply make products for a Christmas fair. It was a short timespan, so it was difficult, but it worked! Some products didn't get finished, others changed, others I made at home.
I made boxes, hand carved leaf pendants, angled hanging decorations, hand carved spoons, keyrings, stacking blocks and stacking snowmen.
Unfortunately I never finished making the dragon coathooks, puzzles or DND mimic boxes, but they can be for another project.
